 ...they came by boat...
....they came by boat

Traveling from Germany to the United States was a perilous journey for our ancestors in the 19th century. Often times the trip across the Atlantic would take 4 to 6 weeks. Most of them could only afford to travel in steerage, a lower deck. The families were crammed in bunkbeds with little room in between and no ventilation. During bad weather they had to stay inside. You can imagine the smells! Besides lack of hygiene there was the threat of running low on food. Some ships arrived in the “New World” with people sick and barely alive. The ones that died during the trip were thrown overboard.

Why did they come and brave danger and uncertainty? To find a better life, a greater opportunity, a place of personal and religious freedom. This is what they hoped for.

Emigration from Germany started already in 1690 with small religious communities. But I could not find one Geuther, Geuter or Geuder among them. The first Geuther appears in the US in 1820, and that is when the flow of German people across the ocean began in earnest. During the following century almost seven million Germans came to the US.

Around the turn of the 19th century almost one third of the United States was of German speaking ancestry.
From 1855 to 1890 Castle Garden in New York served as the East Coast
immigration station.

Later, from 1892 to
1954, Ellis Island received most of the European immigrants.

German immigrants brought Sunday celebrations, the ‘Schuetzenfest’ with beer and bratwurst and German specialties like Lebkuchen; they inspired early childhood education, men’s choirs and gymnastic clubs; they were also instrumental in the printing and newspaper business.
